Refugium zu Sanct Kassian: local history since 1854

Surrounded by vineyards and Alpine peaks, Refugium zu Sanct Kassian is embedded in the listed complex of the old parish church of Lagundo (Algund) near Merano in South Tyrol. The Hortus, the lovingly designed gardens with fragrant herbs, olive and palm trees as well as a natural swimming pond, exudes genuine Mediterranean lightness. Just a few kilometres south of the Refugium lies the renowned spa town of Merano, which was the go-to health resort of Sissi, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, and for decades served as a popular meeting place for European aristocracy. Impressive Art Nouveau buildings and enchanting promenades bear witness to this glorious past.

Things to do in and around Merano

Walking & hiking

Whether you walk along the historic irrigation channels of Algunder Waalweg to Merano, take an inspiring walk through the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle with its botanical wonders, explore one of the hiking trails in the Texelgruppe Nature Park or enjoy the wonderful views from Hochmuth mountain, you will find peace and inspiration almost everywhere in and around Refugium zu Sanct Kassian.

Cycling & mountain biking

If you like travelling on two wheels, you'll be at home at our Refugium Hideaway. The Val d’Adige cycle path and Val Venosta cycle path are both great for a short spin. The region in and around Merano caters to beginners and advanced cyclists alike. You can hire your bike from Bike and Hike in Lagundo. We offer a delivery service for 15€ per bike to certain destinations.

Skiing & other winter activities

Family-friendly slopes and state-of-the-art facilities can be found in the nearby Merano 2000 ski resort as well as in numerous other ski areas in the surrounding mountains. Cross-country skiing or snowshoe hiking are also popular activities in the immediate vicinity of your holiday home.

Culture & sightseeing

Follow in the footsteps of mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner at the Messner Mountain Museums at Sigmundskron Castle or Juval Castle. Yet another castle, Tyrol Castle, offers insights into the history of South Tyrol/Alto Adige, as does the old town of Merano with its charming arcades and enchanting spa promenade.

From April to November, our guests can enjoy the exclusive spa area at the 4-star S Rössl Wellness Hotel in Rabland, with several saunas, swimming pools and a scenic swimming pond. We are happy to organise a shuttle service on request. The neighbouring 4-star Hotel Kassian also offers two heated outdoor pools and three different saunas (Finnish, bio and infrared sauna). Terme Merano, designed by Matteo Thun, is a well-known and popular thermal bath and spa facility. Dive into the blue in 25 different pools or enjoy various saunas and a wide range of body and beauty treatments.
